So on January 28th, I’m\u00a0starting my first cataract surgery. I’ll be having it done on both eyes.\u00a0 I know, I know, to most people it’s not a big deal.\u00a0 Almost everyone I know has had it done or will have it done soon, in fact.\u00a0 Yeah yeah, it’s a 15 minute procedure and it’s simple.\u00a0 I get it. But it IS surgery and there are risks.\u00a0 Not huge risks, but it’s huge if it happens to you.\u00a0 Risk of serious infection that can cause loss of vision, risk of retinal detachment which if not treated soon enough can cause loss of vision, bleeding… you get the idea.<\/p>\n

Rationally I know I have a good surgeon and it’s more likely that nothing\u00a0bad will happen, my eyes will heal, we’ll probably need lower wattage bulbs in our house, and that’ll be the end of it.\u00a0 Emotionally, I can’t help but wonder\u00a0“what if?”\u00a0 What if something happens to my vision?\u00a0 I\u00a0don’t have ears as backup.\u00a0 I don’t have hearing to keep me going.\u00a0 I\u00a0totally rely on my eyes and my vision isn’t all that great to start.\u00a0 I need my eyes to\u00a0read lips.\u00a0 My eyes are my ears.\u00a0 What if I have neither?<\/p>\n

Of course the noble and notable heroine Helen Keller comes to mind.\u00a0 If she could do what she did, what am I\u00a0worried about?\u00a0\u00a0But I don’t know if I have her courage.\u00a0 I know I’ve been strong up until now, but I’ve had something to hold onto.<\/p>\n

But this isn’t an \u00a0“oh\u00a0gee I feel sorry for me” blog.\u00a0 It’s more like a wondering out loud blog.\u00a0 Will I get more than I can handle?
