{"id":303,"date":"2017-08-04T19:05:47","date_gmt":"2017-08-04T23:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/?p=303"},"modified":"2024-02-17T14:23:59","modified_gmt":"2024-02-17T18:23:59","slug":"deaf-aint-dead-and-even-the-guide-can-get-lost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/?p=303","title":{"rendered":"Deaf Ain&#8217;t Dead and Even the Guide can Get Lost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started watching a fascinating show called &#8220;Switched at Birth.&#8221; \u00a0While the show is entertaining itself, what has me glued to the screen is that they have deaf characters and they are main characters. \u00a0They aren&#8217;t a casual part of the show, they <em>are<\/em> the show and all the main characters have learned to use American Sign Language. \u00a0 They&#8217;ve inspired me to start re-learning \u00a0the American Sign Language (ASL) DHH and I studied for two years some time ago. They&#8217;ve also given me some new insight and perspective into being Deaf or Hearing.<\/p>\n<p>When we studied ASL, we not only learned the language, we learned about the etiquette, culture, and \u00a0history. \u00a0We learned there&#8217;s a difference between Deaf and deaf. \u00a0Deaf, with a capital D, is not just a state of hearing, it&#8217;s a culture and way of life. \u00a0 As a person who did hear, who lost her hearing as an adult, I am not capital D Deaf. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t grow up in the culture and to say my ASL is choppy is probably being generous to myself.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve also started me wondering where I fit in. \u00a0I&#8217;m no longer Hearing but I&#8217;m not capital D Deaf. \u00a0There&#8217;s no real group for me, no real place for me. \u00a0I don&#8217;t sign fluently so I can&#8217;t use an interpreter, but I can&#8217;t hear so I can&#8217;t benefit from many things unless they&#8217;re captioned.<\/p>\n<p>So where does that leave me? \u00a0Where do other people think that should leave me? \u00a0Do I stop going to things because I miss too much, do I go and allow myself to feel alone among people? \u00a0How much should I put myself out there and how much should I give up? \u00a0I don&#8217;t have either culture behind me &#8211; Deaf or Hearing. \u00a0Where they are clearly two different ways of life, I am in between &#8211; not quite one, no longer the other. \u00a0I guess I have to be my own group!<\/p>\n<p>I cope, I function, I enjoy my life, and I don&#8217;t feel sorry for myself 99% of the time. \u00a0I don&#8217;t cry over what I no longer have and I work hard to compensate for not having it. \u00a0I also try to help others since I understand what they&#8217;re going through. \u00a0I&#8217;m often told I don&#8217;t act deaf enough, yet occasionally I feel helplessly deaf.<\/p>\n<p>There are many paths open to us in life &#8211; we just have to choose the right ones for us. \u00a0Whatever our challenges, life is still about moving forward. \u00a0I may not walk every path, but I walk many paths. \u00a0Sometimes the path isn&#8217;t even there yet so I just plow my way through. \u00a0And sometimes even the guide can get lost,<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter if we&#8217;re Deaf, deaf, or Hearing as long as we never stop walking those paths. \u00a0Deaf ain&#8217;t Dead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve started watching a fascinating show called &#8220;Switched at Birth.&#8221; \u00a0While the show is entertaining itself, what has me glued to the screen is that they have deaf characters and they are main characters. \u00a0They aren&#8217;t a casual part of the show, they are the show and all the main characters have learned to use [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-303","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-musings"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/303","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=303"}],"version-history":[{"count":12,"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/303\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":559,"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/303\/revisions\/559"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=303"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=303"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/lostmyhearing.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=303"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
